How OTHM Level 3, 4 and 5 diplomas build towards a UK bachelor’s degree, and the conditions that apply at every step.
A diploma can be the first two years of your degree journey. The university decides the last step.
OTHM diplomas are Ofqual-regulated UK qualifications. Level 4 and Level 5 are assessed at the same academic level as the first and second years of a three-year UK bachelor’s degree, which is why many students use them as a route towards a degree. This page explains how that route works and what to check before you rely on it.
The pathway
From Level 3 to a final-year top-up

Level 3 Diploma
A foundation for school leavers and career changers. Completing it lets you progress to a relevant Level 4 diploma.

Level 4 Diploma
Equivalent to HNC level and to Year 1 of a three-year UK bachelor’s degree. Progress to Level 5, or apply for Year 2 entry where a university accepts it.

Level 5 Diploma
Equivalent to Foundation Degree and HND level and to Year 2 of a three-year UK bachelor’s degree.

Degree top-up
Apply to join the final year of a bachelor’s degree. Completing that year is what earns the degree.
University decides
Equivalence wording is taken from OTHM’s published qualification specifications. A diploma does not award a bachelor’s degree, and progression to a university is never automatic.

Choose the degree
Find the university and the top-up programme you want, and whether it is taught on campus, online or in another country.

Match the diploma
Check which OTHM qualification the university currently accepts for entry, in which subject, and with how many credits.

Check the conditions
Confirm English language requirements, study mode, visa rules if relevant, and the fees for the remaining study.

Apply to the university
The university assesses you individually and makes its own admission decision.

Assignment-based, not effort-free
OTHM diplomas have no final exams. Each unit is assessed through coursework: written assignments, reports, case studies, projects and presentations.
That suits students who learn best by applying ideas, but the work is continuous. Every assignment is marked by MIBD faculty against OTHM’s learning outcomes and then externally verified by OTHM, and you receive feedback throughout.
No exam hall. Plenty of real work to show for it.

Diploma to degree: common questions
Does a Level 5 diploma give me a bachelor’s degree?
No. A Level 5 diploma is academically equivalent to the second year of a three-year UK bachelor’s degree, but it does not award a degree. To earn the degree you would complete a final-year top-up at a university.
What is a top-up degree?
A top-up is the final year of a bachelor’s degree, designed for students who already hold a qualification at Level 5 (such as an OTHM Level 5 diploma, an HND or a Foundation Degree). When you complete it, the university awards the bachelor’s degree.
Which universities accept OTHM Level 5 diplomas?
OTHM publishes a list of universities that have confirmed progression arrangements for its qualifications. The list changes, and each university sets its own subject match, credit and English requirements, so always check the current conditions for the exact course you want.
Can I go straight from Level 4 into a degree?
OTHM states that Level 4 holders may be eligible to apply for Year 2 of a three-year UK bachelor’s degree at universities with progression arrangements. Many students instead complete Level 5 first and apply for the final year.
Is admission to the university guaranteed?
No. Progression arrangements mean a university has agreed to consider OTHM qualifications for entry. Each applicant is assessed individually against the university’s own requirements.
